Dirt Warp
a collaborative design experiment with a fellow Architecture student, for Room One Thousand’s “Sediment” Design Competition in Spring 2023.
Dirt Warp won the "Sediment" Room One Thousand Design Competition at UC Berkeley's College of Environmental Design. The piece is a statement on layering, in context to its construction with multiple stripes of locally harvested woods, the rings of a tree, and the layering of harvested clays and sediment in the building of an artifact.
Dirt Warp is designed as a multi-person pottery wheel. On the day of installation in Spring of 2023, students and community members gathered in the Wurster Building courtyard to contribute to the formation of many layered clay artifacts. We invited a pottery instructor to assist in the process of community build vases and bowls.
Dirt Warp's spinning surface is a section of a wood trunk, harvested from a lumber refuge in Richmond, CA. The clay used on the day of installation was harvested from the Berkeley hills, furthering the wheel's statement on local materiality.
